Biography of General Peter Gansevoort
Peter Gansevoort was an officer of the Albany County Militia and a Brigadier-General in the Continental Army. During the Revolutionary
War, he held Fort Stanwix, Rome, NY, against all odds during a three-week siege by Colonel Barry St. Leger and his forces of 1,700 British soldiers, Tories, and Indians.
Peter’s marriage to Catherine (Caty) Van Schaick, daughter of Wessel and Maria (Gerritse) Van Schaick, took place on January 12, 1778, in the Van Schaick
Mansion, our chapter house.
