Current Projects Our Chapter Actively Supports

Veterans Hospital -
Our chapter has an ongoing relationship with the Samuel S. Stratton Veterans Administration Medical Center in Albany. We provide toiletries, magazines, and afghans which are used to welcome veterans when they are checked in. This project is coordinated by the National DAR Representative who is a member of our chapter.

Scholarship - Marion Lewis Smith Scholarship -
The Marion Lewis Smith Scholarship Committee was formed in 1994 for the purpose of promoting patriotism, education, and an appreciation of American History to area youth.

Through the generous bequest of our past Vice-Regent, Marion Lewis Smith, our chapter awards several scholarships each year to area students. Information on applying for these scholarships is sent to guidance offices at local school districts in the spring.

Children of the American Revolution Society Reinstatement -
In 1907 our DAR chapter started the Schuyler Society of the C.A.R. We reinstated that C.A.R. society in 2003. Our mission is to instill an appreciation for the history of our country’s founding, to encourage leadership and citizenship, and to have some fun seeing and reliving the history of our area. Our Mansion website has more information at VanSchaickMansion.org , or go to the National Society Children of the American Revolution website at www.nscar.org .

Project Microfiche - New York State Library -
A dedicated committee of volunteers has worked at the New York State Library in Albany for the past eight years to provide information for the “Revised Master Index of DAR New York State Genealogical Records.”  The New York State Library collection consists of nearly one thousand volumes of genealogical records which have been submitted by DAR members since 1923. The project requires photocopying, filming, and loading of fiche and fiche headings.  Many volumes remain to be filmed.

The “Revised Master Index of New York State DAR Genealogical Records” was published in 1998 by chapter member Jean Worden. The two book set is available for viewing in the library of the Van Schaick Mansion. Contact the chapter for more details.

Honoring our Ancestors- Ancestor and Veteran’s Memorials

We hold annual services in the Albany Rural Cemetery at the graves of our General Peter Gansevoort; our founder, Catherine Gansevoort Lansing; and our DAR Real Daughter, Elizabeth Weed.  Chapter members maintain the graves and plant flowers prior to the services.

Cleaning the Grave Site of our Chapters Founder

In our effort to honor our ancestors, we identify “Ancestor Memorials” and place markers on veterans’ graves which are unmarked or have damaged tombstones.

We have marked gravesites for patriots of the American Revolution. We have researched veterans from other conflicts to help the organization, Forgotten Warriors, to provide tombstones.

We plan to restore tombstones in the Van Schaick Cemetary next to our house in the immediate future.
